Evidence: Both apha2M and a2M* bind a variety of cytokines and growth factors, including FGF1, FGF2, FGF4, and FGF6, but not FGF5, FGF7, FGF9, and FGF10 [161]. The binding of a2M to FGF2 occurs with high affinity (Table 1) and is primarily hydrophobic in nature [162]. a2M sequesters FGF2 in the extracellular environment and inhibits its cell interaction, protease-inducing activity [163] and mitogenic capacity [161].
